On August 29, 2014, the horror thriller 'As Above, So Below' was released to the public and was received with extremely poor reviews from critics. Movie critic Brooke Corso gave the movie a low review due to its plot inconsistencies, and cliche ridden script. She began by giving a little background on the story, and quickly dwells into the many movie sins committed by 'As Above, So Below'. Her claim of value is built upon disapprovement of the film, with its characters being extremely dumb with a lack of common sense and concern for anyone else but themselves, despite their expert knowledge of many fields, including, but not limited to mythology and ancient mysticism. Brooke Corso builds Ethos when she compares her experience of being in Vienna's catacombs to the ones the characters of the movie were in, mentioning that she would not go deeper as they are extremely creepy. Logos is implemented when she writes about elements of the plot, and introduces the cast, and pathos is used when she makes fun of the movies ridiculous attempts at being scary.  It is highly advised by Brooke Corso and many critics like herself to not waste money and time on this film.

  1. After reading the review, I would take her advice on the movie because she has personally experienced the catacombs. The fact that she experienced the event makes me wonder if she is telling the truth. However, the pathos provided does not have much affect. By simply saying it is not scary does not alter my belief about watching the movie. The claim of value does create controversy because the viewers would question as to why the characters are supposed to be intelligent, but were portrayed in an ignorant way.

  2. Raffi, I found your summary of the review to be extremely detailed and informative. I enjoyed your skillful choice of vocabulary and thorough explanation of why you believed certain statements fit under said claims. However, if you included a brief summary of the movie itself, it would have allowed those not much into movies(such as myself) to understand your writing more thoroughly and smoothly. But overall, sensational job!

  3. I have actually seen this movie in theaters and personally enjoyed it. I thought the idea of the movie was great and the type of camera they used in the film helped enhance the mysteriousness and spookiness to the sets. Apart from my opinion, your blog was very nicely written with great description about the ethos, logos, and pathos. You did an excellent job! Go Raffi!

  4. Raffi, I found your summarization of this movie review to be brief but comprehensive. I enjoy your use of vast vocabulary. Your use of all three appeals and description of the claims were portrayed wonderfully. Your review was intelligently written and sensibly thought out. I enjoyed seeing your post. Keep at it!!!

  5. Dumb characters, lack of common sense, oh wait it is a horror movie. How many times have we ever watched a horror movie and thought to ourselves, "No you idiots, do not split up. That is the number one rule in horror movies." We have to take into account that a horror movie with intelligent protagonists would kill the suspense and end the film with a Scooby-Doo conclusion. It was comforting to find a negative review about a scary movie which we can laugh at for its mistakes.

  6. Without writing an unnecessarily lengthy piece, Raffi successfully presented the critic, Brooke Corso’s review on the movie ‘As Above, So Below’. He described an interesting case of ethos, as the author of the review herself had visited the catacombs of Vienna, the setting of the film. He justifies the other appeals used in the review, as well as the claim of value that was put in motion. In his concluding sentence, Raffi’s attempt at saving the hard-earned dollars of readers is appreciated.
